Why Edmonton

Edmonton is one of the best cities to live in and raise a family. As well as being relatively affordable, it has many other advantages:
  • Edmonton has been labelled one of Canada’s “smart cities,” based on outstanding co-operation between the University of Alberta, the city and the business community.
  • It is known for both its friendly people and for being environmentally friendly. It has one of the most sophisticated recycling, composting and waste-management systems in the world.
  • Edmonton is home to North America’s longest stretch of urban green space. The wide, unspoiled North Saskatchewan River valley winds its way through the heart of the city, and contains more than 50 kilometres of trails for walking, running, biking and cross-country skiing. The University of Alberta is located on the south bank, across from the provincial legislature and downtown.
  • Edmonton has a strong music & theatre scene, and is known as the “summer festival city.” The city can lay claim to North America’s largest live theatre event – the Edmonton Fringe festival (second in size only to the Edinburgh Fringe), North America’s largest folk music festival and a hugely popular multicultural festival called Heritage Days.
  • The city enjoys more than 17 hours of daylight in the summer months, more than any other major Canadian city.
  • Edmonton is only four hours away by car from the majestic Canadian Rockies and the renowned Banff and Jasper national parks, visited by thousands of international tourists each year.
  • Edmonton has the world’s largest shopping mall, the West Edmonton Mall, also a major tourist destination.
