Department History

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology was formally established in 1922. Our website would not be complete without describing “where we came from and how we got here.”

Dr. B.F. Mitchell has written a detailed summary of the development of clinical services in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and the development of teaching programs.

The details come largely from the final “Chair’s Report to the University Hospital Board” by Dr. Ross Vant at the conclusion of his term as department chair (1941-62), and from the memoirs of Dr. Tom Nelson who served as acting chair in 1981-1982. Reading through the writings of these two men, it is ironic how “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

We are fortunate Dr. Vant and Dr. Nelson were interested in preserving the department’s history.
