Overview

​The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology belongs to the School of Human Development in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. The faculty, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is internationally ranked as one of the world's top 50 medical schools.
 
The department administration and its clinical divisions are housed in the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, the only women's hospital in Alberta. This bright, modern facility at the Royal Alexandra Hospital site opened in 2010.
 
The department has five divisions and 19 full-time academic faculty members.
 
Faculty members encompass the full range of academic medicine. An accomplished team of educators trains medical undergraduate and postgraduate students in the provision of innovative patient care, while the department's distinguished cadre of scientists focuses on clinical, discovery and translational research. The department's basic science research labs are located on the U of A campus.

To develop a women's health program recognized across Canada and beyond for excellence in education, research and clinical care.
 
To support and realize its vision, the department has the following objectives:
  • Integrate and provide optimal patient care in the clinical disciplines that define the program.
  • Develop a national reputation in undergraduate and postgraduate training and evaluation.
  • Foster and produce comprehensive basic, translational and clinical research programs.
  • Provide opportunities for appropriate faculty and staff development.
  • Promote a team environment for both staff and trainees which encourages respect, creativity, recognition of achievements, and the development of partnerships that advance the goals of the department.
  • Promote an environment that allow patients to enhance their emotional, cultural and social well-being.

Mission

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is committed to excellence in fetal and women's reproductive health through leadership and scholarship in education, in illness prevention and clinical care, and in fundamental and applied research.
